CHARITY / TZEDAKA
In Hebrew, the word used for "charity" is tzedaka . However, the true meaning of tzedaka is "justice" or "righteousness". It is only just and right that we give back to the world and not merely take from it. The world in which we live today is unfinished and imperfect, and we, G-d's partners in the universe, must do our share. By giving to charity, we help repair and perfect the world, a concept called Tikkun Olam.
A vital part of our mission statement as an official Cultural Association of Rome is contributing to the religious, social, cultural life of the community here in Rome, and in the world around us. For this reason, Rome For Jews and its individual members have proudly contributed for the purchase of new prayer books and ritual items, the restoration of objects in the Jewish Museum, sponsoring a special presentation from the Israel Law Center (Shurat Ha-Din, the courageous law team that sues terrorists and blocks their funding all over the world), planting a grove of 100 trees in Israel, the Chanukah edition of Chabad of Rome's periodical, and much more.
NEWS FLASH!
Our latest project is very ambitious - to plant an entire new vineyard in Yesha (Judea and Samaria in Israel), dedicated to the memory of Rav Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg z"l, murdered at the hands of inhuman terrorists in Chabad House in Mumbai. The goal is to plant an orchard or vineyard of 100 trees or grapevines in a Jewish farm in Yesha (aka Judea and Samaria).
As you will see on the webpage link - https://www.formdesk.com/my/trees - the money goes to only religious Jewish farmers who observe all halachot pertaining to agriculture in Eretz Yisrael, and who observe the Shmittah year.
There will be a plaque put up, naming the grove or vineyard after the Rabbi and Rebbetzin. The cost of this is US $25 per tree or grapevine, or $2500 for the entire project. The program has assured us that all donations are indeed tax-deductible in the US. Rome For Jews has already set aside the base amount of 1,000 dollars. If you would like to sponsor any amount of trees or organize donations from your congregations, families or friends, just let us know and we will tell you how to contribute to our special fund
The charities listed below are just some of our favorites, one may give in money, time, energy,
